Decomposed Granite materials are exactly that, granite rock in a state of decay that is quarried and processed through screening equipment to be sold as ground cover, pathway, athletic field surfaces and driving surfaces. Typical sizes are 3/8 minus, 1/4 minus and track fines. True decomposed granite materials have irregular semi round quartz "gravel" aggregates in the 3/8" minus mix.
Crushed Stone Fines are almost always are similar to decomposed granite but instead of a high level of quartz (sand like material ) aggregates and fines, they have semi flat stone chips with about 80 to 85 percent "dirt" as the fines. The crushed stone fines are the by-product from make larger sizes of crushed rock.
We have found that most crushed stone fine materials have too much "dirt" and not enough little bits of aggregate or miniature gravel in the material. When crushed stone fines get wet they large amount of dirt in the material becomes very muddy. We try to only sell crushed stone materials that will not get sticky or muddy after irrigation or rain water gets the material wet.
There are many color tones of brown decomposed granite and crushed stone fines products. Depending upon the color tone these materials can make a soft or bold impact in a garden, landscape or driving area.
